SIM cards & keeping a number

Every prepaid SIM in Singapore must be registered, with at most three prepaid SIMs per ID document across all operators. The key rule: since 15 July 2024 (IMDA), a passport-registered prepaid SIM is valid for at most 30 days. To keep it, Singtel requires re-registration at a shop with a Singapore IC or work pass within 30 days; SIMBA requires renewal with your passport at an authorised centre within 30 days, not online.

So tourists with only a passport effectively can’t keep a Singapore number while abroad — the old tip of “top up a hi!Card to keep the number” no longer works for visitors.

Keeping the number
Passport-registered SIMs last at most 30 days and are then suspended without refund. Holders of a Singapore IC or work pass can re-register at a Singtel shop within 30 days and then extend validity with top-ups like any prepaid card (see the official site for days per top-up).
ID check
Tourists: passport (30 days max); residents: Singapore IC or pass. Max three prepaid SIMs per ID across all operators.
SMS & calls
Singtel (official): outgoing SMS isn’t supported while roaming; incoming SMS depends on 3G availability in the country you’re in

Pros

  • Singapore’s largest operator
  • Long-term use for holders of Singapore ID

Watch out

  • Passport-only tourists lose the SIM after 30 days — it can’t be kept from abroad
  • No outgoing SMS abroad, and incoming SMS needs 3G, which many countries have switched off
