SIM cards & keeping a number

Bangladeshi SIMs require fingerprint biometric registration. The cap per ID has tightened repeatedly: from 15 SIMs to 10 in April 2025, and reportedly to 5 for new registrations from 1 January 2026.

Tourist SIMs: under BTRC rules they are bought with a passport and visa, at most two per passport, in 7-, 15- and 30-day packs, and are deactivated automatically when the visa or the pack expires; media citing BTRC documents say they run for the visa period, capped at 6 months. Longer stays need an ordinary SIM against a work visa.

The recycling period was shortened in December 2024: a BTRC directive cut it from 18 months to 12 (11 months inactive plus 30 days’ notice) — the “15 months (450 days)” figure previously shown here is out of date. Under the directive subscribers can pay to extend registration by two or three years, recharging during that time.
