SIM cards & keeping a number

All Swiss SIMs, prepaid included, must be registered: since 1 March 2018 the revised surveillance act (BÜPF) requires sellers to check an official ID and keep a copy; violations are fined by the federal surveillance service (first fines in 2019, CHF 400 each). Foreigners can use a passport.

yallo (a Sunrise brand) prepaid is a common keep-number choice: officially a free SIM with CHF 10 credit, and one call, SMS or data session every 12 months keeps it active.

yallo Prepaid (eSIM)

Number-keeping SIM
Network
Sunrise network (yallo is a brand of Sunrise GmbH)
Price
Official: prepaid SIM / eSIM free with CHF 10 starting credit, no monthly fee
Keeping the number
yallo terms art. 7: if a prepaid line is unused for 12 months, yallo may block it without notice; if you don’t request reconnection within a further 6 months, the contract ends and the number is reassigned. yallo’s help centre says 1 month instead — plan on 1 month to be safe. Calls, SMS and data all count as use
ID check
Accepted IDs include a foreign passport, EU ID card and Swiss residence permits; you can scan it online while ordering. Max 5 prepaid SIMs per customer. Physical SIMs ship only within Switzerland; user write-ups say online eSIM signup also asks for a Swiss address (not stated officially)
SMS & calls
A normal Swiss number. Per Holafly’s Feb 2026 summary, China is in yallo roaming zone 2 and receiving SMS is free; other roaming services are expensive (data billed per MB). yallo’s rate page couldn’t be read — check the Roaming Cockpit in my yallo. Make sure “use abroad” isn’t switched off before travelling

Pros

  • One use every 12 months — very cheap to keep
  • Free SIM with CHF 10 credit
  • Foreign passports officially accepted

Watch out

  • Physical SIMs ship only within Switzerland; eSIM reportedly needs a Swiss address
  • Terms (6 months) and help centre (1 month) disagree on the reconnection window
  • Free SMS reception in China only has a third-party source
