How to read a number

+14165550123

+1Country code
Shared across North America: the US, Canada and several Caribbean countries all use +1.
416Area code
Identifies a region, not a carrier. 416 is Toronto.
555Exchange (NXX)
Maps to a rate centre within the area code and to the carrier that was first assigned this block — numbers are handed out in blocks of 1,000.
0123Line number
The line’s own four digits.

Same North American Numbering Plan as the US, read the same way; the area code shows where the number was issued, not the carrier.

Same as the US: physical SIMs are fine, virtual numbers get rejected.

Carriers & prefixes

Mobile prefixes by carrier.

Number portability applies — a prefix only shows the original carrier. Since March 2007. Numbers use regional area codes, so they don’t reveal the carrier.

SIM cards & keeping a number

Canadian prepaid needs no ID or credit check, but it’s a poor fit for keeping a number from abroad. The prepaid brands often recommended — Public Mobile and Lucky Mobile — can’t receive SMS once you leave Canada (Public Mobile offers only a US roaming add-on), with no roaming anywhere else, so you won’t get Canadian verification codes while in China.

To receive SMS abroad you generally need a postpaid plan with international roaming (e.g. Koodo’s daily-rate roaming), usually set up in Canada. These two prepaid brands only suit numbers used inside Canada.

Public Mobile / Lucky Mobile prepaid

Local prepaid
Network
Public Mobile on TELUS, Lucky Mobile on Bell
Price
Monthly plans — check the official sites for current prices (Chinese comparison sites cite about C$15/month)
Keeping the number
Renew monthly. Without enough balance the line is suspended: Lucky Mobile (official) allows 120 days to pay, after which the account is deactivated and the number released; Public Mobile’s Service Terms (March 2026) permanently close accounts suspended for more than 90 days, or 58 days for a new activation that isn’t renewed after its first cycle.
ID check
Prepaid needs no ID, address or credit check — just a payment method
SMS & calls
No SMS outside Canada: Lucky Mobile has no roaming at all; Public Mobile offers only a US roaming add-on

Pros

  • No ID, can be opened online
  • Cheap if used only inside Canada

Watch out

  • No SMS or verification codes while in China — not a keep-number option for receiving codes abroad
  • Suspended for more than 90–120 days and the number is gone
