SIM cards & keeping a number

Every Brazilian line must be registered to an identified person (Law 10.703/2003). Foreigners can use a passport, though some carriers’ apps only accept a CPF tax number, so activation may need a call or a store visit. Prepaid lines stay active through top-ups; lapsed lines are restricted first, then cancelled.

Keeping the number
Claro (official): once the last top-up’s validity ends, data and calls stop; 90 days later without a top-up the line is cancelled; after 180 days cancelled the number may be reassigned. TIM is similar and can be recovered by topping up within 180 days of cancellation.
ID check
Passport or CPF; TIM’s app needs a CPF, but foreigners can call *144 to activate with a passport

Pros

  • Rules are clearly published by the carriers

Watch out

  • Service stops as soon as validity ends
  • Activation is awkward without a CPF
